Growth Beyond Limits. Go where you need to be. And she was just one of those people that understood what it took to survive and also to make money. So my early entrepreneurial journey didn't begin outside of my home. It actually began in my home where I saw it modeled. And my mom taught me how to become a salesman. So imagine yourself at the age of six or seven, you're already learning how to sell, how to, how to how to hustle. And so I think a lot of times entrepreneurs think, well, I'm waiting for someone to give me an opportunity to be an entrepreneur. But sometimes you just have to look at your surrounding and activate your surrounding, activate your beginning. Because a lot of times we overlook where we start and we use it as a crutch to not go forward. So on this episode, I really want you to understand what it takes, the DNA, the makeup of someone who is going to be successful. And there are five things I'm going to share with you that helps you to understand what it takes to become successful. And those five things, I think, if you apply them, can help you take your journey from where you are now to the next thing. Number one is you have to understand what I call the power of an unfortunate start. Oh my gosh, the power of an unfortunate start. Sometimes you're not asked to be born, not sometimes, you're never asked to be born in the family that you're born into. The elements that you were born into has nothing, those were not your choices. That was not your choice. But there's power in any start. And where you're going to find that power is when you don't just live in what you started, but you understand it and you analyze it. There are some of you who's watching this or who's listening to this, and you're going, man, the family that I came from, the neighborhood I came from, um, the area that I came from, or the country that I'm currently in, um doesn't afford me the start. But here's one thing I've learned about success and about growth. You don't wait for someone to give you an opportunity. You create the opportunity from where you're at. So I want to talk about the power of an unfortunate beginning. And for me, I grew up um surrounded with poverty, even though my mom was an entrepreneur, but we were barely making ends meet. We were barely surviving. And what I did was I developed an appetite for something that was different. I took the feeling that I had of going to bed hungry sometimes, of not having the nice clothes like my um, you know, my my friends at school, not having the luxury, not having a television in the home, not having indoor plumbing. I took that and developed an appetite for tomorrow. You see, because a lot of times the elements that you see today can either serve as a bridge or as a sledgehammer to crush you. And if you develop an appetite for better, listen to this now. An appetite for better means that you continue, you continually realize that there is more inside of me that I am currently experiencing. So that was one of the things I did. The second thing I did was I developed very early on what I was going to believe about myself. I believe about myself that this is not the end. And once you make an agreement with continuation, now you can overcome frustration. Let me say it one more time. Once you make an agreement with continuation means that I'm going to continue, frustration now becomes a secondary feeling because you've already made an agreement. The third thing is that you remember the feeling of not having enough. And if you can remember how it feels to be poor, if you remember the feel of the feeling of what it feels like to not have enough, to always be a dollar short, you know, one one one resource short from it will now fuel where you want to go. The second thing that got me to be where I am today was developing a level of resilience that fueled my purpose and my passion. Now, a lot of times we talk about resilience as something that we have to struggle with and we have to overcome. I was talking to a friend of mine just yesterday that resilience doesn't always mean that it's hard, even though it's hard, but resilience can be fun, meaning that I can enjoy the process of becoming resilient, where I'm excited about what's on the other side of this. And resilience means that I'm going to develop the capacity to both embrace, enjoy, and empower. Let me say it one more time. To embrace, enjoy, and empower. What that means is I'm going to embrace my circumstance. It's mine. I can't give it to someone else. I'm going to enjoy looking towards what's coming out of this. And one of the things that I have found that has made me and other people successful is that when you have a certain level of curiosity, right? Curiosity to see what is on the other side of this. And I know, I know I'm speaking to someone right now who's listening that goes, he just said a whole word. Curiosity means that I'm going to stick around long enough. I'm going to press through through everything because I want to see what is on the other side of this thing. And if you ask me, Dr. Phil, what is one thing that drives you today? What is, is I'm curious. And I'm going to be curious until I die. No matter what level I get to, no matter what level, no matter what echelon of success I experience, my curiosity will never die. Because I want to see, if I went through this struggle, if I went through this pain, if I went through this circumstance, I want to see what's going to come out of this. Curiosity leads to prosperity. You got to be curious enough to want to know and the audacity to want to do. That's the second thing that carried me is the ability to want is my resilience. The third thing, and I think a lot of people can probably resonate with what I'm about to say. The third thing was the fear of having to stay where I was. Sometimes we see fear as a negative thing. For me, I've always seen fear as a friend. Now you go, man, this fear as a friend. Yeah, fear for me was a friend. Because when I thought about what it would be like to remain where I was, it made me get up early. It still makes me get up early. Like I get up and go to the gym early in the morning. I'm at about 425 every morning, not every morning, but at least five times a week. And I'm in the gym by five. Let me tell you why. First of all, I value my health, but the fear of having chronic diseases or being dependent on medication or having a body that I'm not proud of drives me to do those extra reps, to get on the stairmaster, um, to to to to want to do those squats, to do that bench press, right? And so for me, the fear of having to live on repeat, to live on repeat of what I knew I didn't like drove me and still drives me today. Now, you would say, Dr. Phil, you've written um six books, you're writing your seventh one now, um, you've traveled around the world, you've spoken on major platforms, um, you've been to the pinnacle of your career. Why do you keep trying? I'm not done. I still got a lot more to go. And the fear of being irrelevant, the fear of being something other than what I was created to be drives me. The third thing out of the five that really, really helped me to want to move forward is when I think about what do I want to hand off to the next generation or to my children or my grandchildren, do I want to hand off a legacy that is filled with victory or with wounds? Because a lot of times we want to give to people what we went through, but why don't we do the hard work and hand them something that they don't have to go through? And if you're an entrepreneur and you're a business leader and you're saying, Man, I really want to get to the top. But before you think about getting to the top, think about who else you can bring with you and what you can hand off. Let me share with you something that has helped me learn how to manage opportunities and success. Number one, it's awareness. Awareness that I'm on borrowed time, I'm on limited time. And when you develop an awareness that you don't have a lot of time, and you got to maximize the time, then you start to tell your time where to go. That's the first thing. The second thing for me is aspiration. What do I aspire to do, and what do I aspire to contribute? A lot of leaders can't reach their maximum potential because they don't have any awareness, right? They they they lack awareness and they lack that aspiration, that that that that otherness that's gonna get them to where they know they should be. And for me, the third thing, and I like to do alliteration, you know, so they all start with A. So I talk about awareness, I talked about aspiration. The third one is audacity. Audacity. Um, the audacious person is not someone who is reckless or doesn't count the cost. It's after they count the cost, they multiply it by the outcome and they go for it. That means that being audacious means that you don't need someone to give you permission to start. You don't even need someone to encourage you. You just have that built-in system that tells you that you're going to get this done. And when I look at my life and I look at the enterprises that I manage, the different organizations that I manage, I realize that I'm there because of those three things. I was aware that I can do more. I had the aspiration that I got to hand something off, and I had the audacity to go beyond limits, no pun intended. The fourth thing that really moves the needle for me is impact. I don't want to build businesses because I want to make a lot of money, even though I do want to make a lot of money. But the money that I want to make is not for me to keep. Whether it means sending a kid to college, whether it means helping a single mom build a home, whether it means buying a motorcycle for a family in Haiti or in somewhere to start a motorcycle business, whether it means um helping leaders around the world who never had a chance to attend a leadership seminar. I want to have impact. Because here's the thing Simon Senec said something that resonates with me, and it still resonates with me today. Building a business is about making meaning. And if you make meaning, you will make money. And I really believe that that drives me today. And so one of the things I when I'm coaching entrepreneurs on the startup of their business, I said, you need to work in generosity as one of your core values. Work that into bake it into the cookie, bake it into the dough of your business, that a certain percent of your business will go towards making impact. Because here's the thing the people who are more successful in their business enterprises are people who make impact. I really hope that this is resonating with you and that you're understanding that when you want to get to the point where you're successful, it takes a lot of factors that are working together to drive you to that point. The fifth thing that really drives me to be where I am today and drive me to where I want to get to. You ready for this one? The fifth one really is about it's about legacy, it's about the convergence where everything that you have worked for converges at the end. It's almost like several rivers coming together, converging together to create this this gush, this, this, this, this synergy. And if business leaders are going to be successful, you gotta think about that convergence phase of your life. Because I often teach leaders that there are four sick four significant phases to your life. Number one is the struggle phase where you're struggling, and some of you are probably right there right now, where you know you're barely making payroll, uh, you're barely breaking even, you're struggling. And that's okay. That's not a bad thing when you struggle, because it's learning to steward the struggle phase that's gonna bring you to the next phase, which is the success phase. The success phase, no, not the success phase, excuse me, survival. So struggle, that means you're barely making it. Survival means you just barely pass the struggle phase. Now your head is above water, but barely, right? And so you're able to pay your bills, make a little bit of money, but you're not there yet. You're not quite there yet. The third phase is the success phase. This is now where you're you're hitting all your goals, you're meeting your monthly numbers, you're making money, your business is profitable, your your venture, your brand is growing. You you you you're you're you you have that following, you have the clients, you have the customers. So now you're you're you're clicking on all cylinders. But here's the one of the most critical phases is that significance. What am I going to be remembered for? And for me, I always say this, and I'll say it until I die. My goal is never to be the only person that arrives. I want to add value to people. And so, how do I do that? I add value through the gift of communication. Um, you know, whether it's speaking, whether it's teaching, whether it's a podcast, whether it's writing a book, whether it's um coaching someone. I I want to add value to people because here's the thing successful people don't arrive by themselves, they have what we call success trees, where they arrive with other people, and the fruit of what they have done is manifested through other people. That's why I get people to ask me questions all the time. Dr. Phil, how did you get to where you got to? Three things. Number one, understanding that you were built for more, you are created for more than you're doing right now. Number two, having a drive that no one can put in neutral. I have a lever in my life that never hits reverse and never sits in neutral. It's always on drive. And if you tell me I can't do it, you know what I do? I put it on overdrive. Because when you drive a four by four vehicle, there's a button when you gotta haul something. And so I haul criticism, I haul cynicism, I carry slights. Yes, I keep receipts of people who told me I couldn't. Then I kick that thing in overdrive and I just go for it. I've been told several times in my life, you'll never get this done, you'll never build this organization, you'll never lead this organization. And I've defied those things each and every single time. And the third thing, so I can wrap this up, is that I'm never polished. What that means is that I never see myself as a finished product, I always see myself as a work in progress. Because the day you become satisfied is the day you expire. Satisfaction is the introduction to expiration. Because you become complacent and you stop grinding. I am an unfinished product trying to finish what I've been called to do. And if you can follow those three things, if you can just follow those simple things, I promise you, you won't pursue success. Success will meet you at your inflection point. And so as you're listening to this podcast and you're wondering, how can I get there? Remember, it's not easy, but it's possible. And for me, what I want to do is I want to help as many people figure out how do you go from a poor kid on the streets of an island in the Caribbean to now traveling the world, literally the world, doing the one thing that you love, which is adding value to people. And that's why this podcast exists. So I can help you understand there's barriers to break, goals to achieve, and people to impact. I hope that you really had some time to think about what you heard on this episode today.
